Instant Messaging, also called “IM” for short, is similar to regular e-mail, but less formal and much quicker. It allows people to communicate over the Internet as if they were having a face-to-face conversation. Some Instant Messaging software, like those available through America Online or Yahoo, enables people to see whether their “buddies” or “friends” are logged on or off the Internet. Most software programs are free to download and all they require for use is a screen name or e-mail address.
Instant Message windows are often very small and can be minimized so they are easily hidden on the computer screen. Many teens are signed into their IM accounts all day and use them as answering machines, posting a message for their friends to see when they are away and where they are. Anyone who has your teen’s screen name can easily see if your teen is online or track their activities if your teen lists them in an “away message.”
