Research shows that the earlier a young person uses marijuana or alcohol, the more likely he or she is to become dependent on drugs later in life.
Most adults acknowledge that drug experimentation by teens is risky and can lead to serious trouble. But some say "it’s only marijuana," or "it’s only alcohol", or "it’s a rite of passage". But the fact is that teens who use drugs risk damaging their developing minds and bodies - and face the possibility of addiction.
The National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign encourages parents who suspect that their teen may be using drugs to address this problem as soon as they can. The earlier the situation is dealt with, the easier it is for the parent to keep it from getting out of control and help their teenagers avoid the serious consequences that put their futures at risk.
Employers and unions can support these Early Action efforts by providing helpful resources to parents in the workplace to better prepare them for a discussion with their teens.
