Commemorating Len Bias: A Basketball Great
|
It has been 20 years since the tragic death of college basketball star Len Bias. He died on June 19, 1986 from cocaine intoxication – two days after being drafted by the Boston Celtics to play in the NBA. His death shocked the Nation and served as a catalyst for drug prevention efforts. With the death of such a rising star, someone who had all the potential of a Michael Jordan or Larry Bird, Dr.
Lonise Bias, mother of Len, launched a career focused on drug prevention. Having lost her own son to drug use, Dr. Bias has made it her mission to educate parents about drugs and communication with teens so that good can come of her own son’s death.

Parents are the most powerful influence on their kids when it comes to drug use. Here are five tips that Dr. Bias talks about with parents to help them keep their teens safe, healthy and drug-free:
- Communicate. Keep communication channels open with your teen.
- Be Firm in Setting Rules and Consequences. Clearly state to your teens that drugs are not acceptable and that you would be disappointed if they started using drugs.
- Check In. Ask your teen about their plans, activities and whereabouts.
- Be Engaged. Get involved with your teen’s school and activities.
- Be Observant. Monitor changes in your teen’s physical appearance, attitudes, behaviors or other warning signs like new friends or poor grades.
